OptiBond™ FL adhesive protocol

The application protocol for Kerr OptiBond FL is a total-etch, two-bottle technique used for direct composite restorations. This process involves a separate etching step followed by the application of a primer and an adhesive.

The following steps detail the proper technique for applying the Kerr OptiBond FL adhesive system. 

1. Preparation and isolation

• Isolate the prepared tooth or teeth using a rubber dam or other isolation method.
• Clean the tooth surface and dry the area to be bonded. 

2. Etching

• Apply Kerr Gel Etchant (35–37.5% phosphoric acid) to the enamel and dentin.
• For optimal results, etch enamel for 15–20 seconds and dentin for 10–15 seconds.
• Rinse the tooth thoroughly with water for at least 15 seconds to completely remove the etchant. 

3. Drying

• Gently air-dry the tooth surface for a few seconds to remove excess water. Do not over-dry or desiccate the dentin.
• The surface of the dentin should appear slightly shiny, not chalky or matte, indicating it is properly hydrated («moist bonding»). 

4. Priming

• Dispense one drop of OptiBond FL Prime (Bottle #1) into a disposable mixing well.
• Use an applicator brush to apply the primer to the prepared enamel and dentin surfaces with a light scrubbing or massaging motion for 15 seconds.
• Gently air-dry the primed surface for 5 seconds to evaporate the solvent. The surface should have a slightly glossy appearance. 

5. Applying adhesive

• Using a new applicator brush, dispense one drop of OptiBond FL Adhesive (Bottle #2) into a clean mixing well. Avoid cross-contaminating the primer bottle by reusing a brush that has touched the adhesive.
• Apply a uniform layer of the adhesive to the primed enamel and dentin, also with a light scrubbing motion.
• Use a light air stream to thin the layer and ensure it is evenly distributed. 

6. Light-curing

• Light-cure the adhesive layer for 20 seconds.
• A gold-standard light-curing unit (LCU) should be used. Recommended light-curing times vary depending on the specific LCU, so consult the manufacturer’s recommendations. 

7. Restoration placement

• Once the adhesive is cured, proceed with the placement of the composite material.
